A Sign to Heaven

When I was little my parents used to commute to work. My day care awaited me near where they worked so everyday we would load up the car and be on our way. There were many times that we would be in the car for several hours as we waited in traffic. You can imagine the boredom and certain frustration that would often ensue as we tried to get to work or home.

As we made those journeys day in and day out I began to look forward to the signs that indicated we were getting close to our destination.

In the spiritual world there are also signs. The Rainbow was a sign that God would keep is covenant never to destroy the earth again by a flood. Perhaps we take for granted this beautiful arch, but to the people immediately following Noah's day this was a wonderful reminder of God's mercy and provision. Abraham was told to circumcise his household. From the day God made a promise or covenant with Abraham circumcision was a physical sign that through Abraham's descendants all the world would be blessed. When the Israelites left Egypt God told them to bind the law in their hearts and minds as a sign that God delivered them from Egypt with a mighty hand.

Signs both remind us of where we've been, i.e. the flood, without blessing, in Egypt, and where we are going as in counting on seed time and harvest, blessings from God, and freedom from slavery both physical and spiritual. Perhaps this is why the Sabbath is so important.

The Sabbath is a tremendous sign because it points backwards to our origins as beings created by a benevolent God and forwards to our final redemption from this fallen world. However the Sabbath is unique because it is not only a sign that tells us where we have been and where we are going, it is also a sign of where we are right now with God.

"You shall surely observe My sabbaths; for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you." Exodus 31:13

There are many signs along the road to heaven but perhaps none is as worth noticing as the Sign of the Sabbath.

what are the signs of the times? Aren't we near the end? Jesus said we should be able to read the signs. What are these signs and what are they telling us?

Who is Melchizedek?

Melchizedek is a mysterious figure in the Bible. He appears abruptly with great importance and yet his identity seems unclear. Let's see what we can discover. In Hebrews 7:1-3 it says: 1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,  2 to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,”  3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually. Hebrews 7:1-3 With this text in mind let’s look at some of the characteristics of Melchizedek. 1. He was the King of Salem. Salem means peace. He was the King of Peace. Jesus is called the Prince of Peace in Isaiah 9:6. It says: For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And H...

The Teachable

According to Wikipedia there are approximately 41,000 Christian denominations. That's a lot of denominations. Presumably there are 41,000 different denominations because each of these denominations believe that they have the truth about what God wants for our lives. The question then becomes for the individual: "How do I find the truth?" Well, the bible answers that question in Isaiah 28:9 . The verse says:   Whom will he teach knowledge? And whom will he make to understand the message? Those just weaned from milk? Those just drawn from the breasts? In this text God tells us that He will teach those that are weaned from milk and drawn from the breast. This means that God can only teach people that are not dependent upon others for their spiritual nourishment. Jeremiah 29:13 says: And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. When we compare these two texts we realize that the emphasis in Jeremiah 29:13 is on t...

The Order of the End

Have you ever wondered how the final events of the earth will wrap up for God’s people? There are many answers to that question, but for God’s people there are a few steps that we should all know. And these steps are given in Acts 3:19,20 which says:  Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; 20  And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Acts 3:19,20 Notice that there are three things that happen: first we are told to repent, second we are told that if we repent there will be a refreshing and finally we are told that after these things happen Jesus will return. Repentance, refreshing, and the return of Christ in that order. So let’s briefly look at each of these concepts. First repentance is a turning away from sin. The actual old testament concept of repentance means to literally turn off the path towards something else. But did you know that repent...
