At the close of His time here on the earth our Savior said to the listening disciples:
“…the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28.
The King of kings and Lord of lords came not to be served by others but to serve. From the moment Jesus was born His life was a mission to save others. It is true that Jesus did not begin His official ministry until around thirty years old, but if we look closely at His life record we will see His servanthood throughout His life. The Bible sums up many of the years of His life saying:
“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man”. Luke 2:52
Jesus increased in favour with His fellow man. Why do you think that the people He met regarded Him so highly? Ellen White succinctly shares:
“From His earliest years He was possessed of one purpose; He lived to bless others. For this He found resources in nature; new ideas of ways and means flashed into His mind as He studied plant life and animal life. Desire of Ages, p 70.
And then she adds a little later:
“To those who were in need He would give a cup of cold water, and would quietly place His own meal in their hands.” Desire of Ages, p 87.
Jesus gave of what He had to others and shared what He could. As we reflect on our own blessings we have the opportunity to be like Jesus. It may be something small like a kind word at the right moment or even just a smile. Perhaps we can give a little bit of our time to others and help them with something in their home or maybe we can give someone a ride. There aremany ways that we can reflect the character of Christ, but we should always remember His heart for others.
It is my prayer for you that the following lyrics will sing softly in your mind:
Make me a servant
Humble and meek
Lord let me lift up
Those who are weak
And may the prayer
Of my heart always be
Make me a servant
We can be like Jesus and serve the way that He did. Will you choose to be a servant this September and beyond?
