As the earth hurtles through space during the month of January it slings around the sun to begin its journey towards warmer weather. But while the days may be slowly getting longer the temperatures still cling to the bottom of our thermometers. January is a month of colder days and darker weather. It can be a difficult time that stresses even the strongest optimist. But at this time of year there are still lessons to be learned. The snow that comes and goes reminds us of the grace that covers our brokenness. The darker days remind us to appreciate the light that we receive and the dreary weather reminds us that there is a brighter world to which we must aspire.
In fact, January is really a microcosm of the conflict between good and evil. The Bible says:
“For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.” Romans 8:22
The winter months and the darker days remind us that the world isn’t the way that it is supposed to be. The bare trees and monotone colors speak to the reality of sin. God wants us to inhabit a brighter place but He also wants us to want a brighter place. Are we looking for the land that is fairer than day? Are we looking for heaven?
Ellen White tells us that:
“Few believe with heart and soul that we have a hell to shun and a heaven to win.” Desire of Ages, p 636.
Are you truly looking for a better place? Or have you become content in this dark and sometimes gray world? January is a blessing. It reminds us that creation needs to be restored and that God has a better plan for this earth.
As you encounter the aftermath of the holidays and the beginning of the year remember that no matter how dark the day might be there is hope. God has prepared for you and I a better place: a place where the light of God’s throne shines forever more, a place where the tree of life gives fruit every month, a place where God’s people can dwell together forever.
“Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
